Private companies may issue stock and have shareholders, but their shares do not trade on public exchanges and are not issued through an initial public offering (IPO). As a result, private firms do\u00a0not need to meet the Securities and Exchange Commission&#8217;s (SEC) strict filing requirements for\u00a0public companies. Some of the most famous companies in the world are private companies, including Facebook, Ikea, agriculture giant Cargill, and candy maker Mars.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Though private companies come in all sizes, a vast majority of private companies are small businesses. Investors in private companies tend to be those who are closest to the founders: family, friends, colleagues, employees and\u00a0angel investors.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>If a small private company needs to raise outside\u00a0money\u00a0to grow, the next round of financing often comes from\u00a0venture capital\u00a0(VC) firms who specialize in providing\u00a0capital\u00a0for high-risk, high-reward opportunities. Another\u00a0option\u00a0is to get financing from a few large institutional investors via a\u00a0private placement.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>If a private company is able to grow large enough, it may eventually decide to &#8220;go public,&#8221; meaning it\u00a0issues\u00a0shares\u00a0via an\u00a0initial public offering (IPO)\u00a0and shares are then traded on public\u00a0stock\u00a0exchanges.
