The criteria can also be used to assess any environmental risks that a company may face and how those risks are managed. Is there, for example, a problem with its ownership of contaminated land, disposal of hazardous waste, management of toxic emissions, or compliance with government environmental regulations?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-7\">Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Criteria Work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-8\">Investors (notably younger generations) have, in recent years, shown interest in putting their money where their values are. As a result, brokerage firms and mutual fund companies have started offering\u00a0exchange-traded funds\u00a0(ETFs) and other financial products that follow ESG criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-10\">Robo-advisors, such as\u00a0Betterment\u00a0and\u00a0Wealthfront, have used them to appeal to these investors.
