The Tanzanian students were led by Mohamed Mohamed (SRC President: Kampala International University, Dar es Salaam Campus) (second row: far left) and Ephraem Mollel (SRC President: KCMC University) (second row: sixth from the left), accompanied by Habibu Awesi (Second Secretary: High Commission of the United Republic of Tanzania) (first row: far right) and Dr Hamza Mokiwa (second row: fifth from the left). The Unisa NSRC was led by Simukai Murerwa (centre front), accompanied by Irene Mohasoa (Acting Dean of Students) (centre front).

On 30 May 2016, Unisa’s National Students’ Representative Council had the privilege of hosting a delegation of students from the United Republic of Tanzania. The agenda of the day was to have a bilateral session on models of student governance and to give attendees the opportunity to share best practices.

The Tanzanian delegation comprised students from Kampala International University and the Kilimanjaro Medical University. The interaction was jointly enabled by Dr Hamza Mokiwa from the Department of Science and Technology Education, the Embassy of Tanzania and Irene Mohasoa, Acting Dean of Students.

With both leadership groups sharing their governance models and giving insights on challenges they face, it became very clear that socioeconomic matters, the political environment and the national  government structures of the respective countries play a significant role in determining the student governance models.  The students characterised the interaction as a meaningful and enlightening engagement which is desirable for internationalisation and global integration. Mokiwa lauded the Department of Student Affairs for facilitating the interaction of students, providing a rare opportunity for exposure from which students from both countries can benefit.
