1. What is the selection process for the degree in Nursing?

All prospective students need to comply with the following steps to be considered for selection for the degree in Nursing.

  • Apply online for admission to the NWU with final grade 11 exam results: Deadline 30 June
  • All candidates need to submit the following documents after the completion of the online application:
    • Grade 12 June exam results: Deadline 2nd week in August
    • Completed job shadowing portfolio: Deadline 31 July
    • Contact person: Bernice Mokele at the School of Nursing

PLEASE NOTE: Should the June grade 12 exam marks not be submitted by the 2nd week of August (or as soon as possible after receiving the results), then there will be assumed that you are no longer interested to study Nursing at the NWU.

  • Four (4) year degree course
  • One (1) year Community Service
  • Registration South African Nursing Council (SANC)
  • General Nursing
  • Community Nursing
  • Psychiatric Nursing
  • Midwifery

Provisional selection of 65 candidates will take place during the 3rd week of August, taking into account of the following:

  • Grade 12 June exam results – primarily in Mathematics and/or Physical Sciences and/or Lifesciences, as well as APS score will be used to calculate a quantitative selection mark.
  • Henceforth all candidates’ selection mark are arranged from highest to lowest and the top 65 (+10%) are placed on the “provisional” selection list.
  • Successful candidates will be informed of the selection process results via SMS and/or email.
  • The final selection will be completed as soon as the final grade 12 exam results are available (usually early January).
  • No psychometric tests will be written.
  • 60 hours of job shadowing is required as part of the selection process. This needs to be emailed to Mrs Bernice Mokele at Bernice.mokele@nwu.ac.za before 31 July.

The language of instruction for contact students in this curriculum is Afrikaans.
Lectures are made accessible by means of educational interpreting into English for students who do not have sufficient capacity in Afrikaans.
