Mediclinic (Pty) Ltd is registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training until 31 December 2025/2026 as a private higher education institution under the Higher Education Act, 1997. Registration certificate no. 2008 HEO7/006.

The programme Diploma in Operating Department Assistance is accredited by the Council on Higher Education. On completion of the programme, the learner will not be eligible to register at any of the existing professional councils.

The Diploma in Emergency Medical care is accredited by the Council on Higher Education, Health Professions Council of South Africa and registered by the Department of Higher Education and Training.

Registration fee

All qualifying applicants will be required to pay a non-refundable registration fee of R250. Banking details will only be provided to qualifying applicants.

Funding model

Successful applicants will be employed by Mediclinic (Pty) Ltd, which funds the programme as well as prescribed books for the employees. Learners are responsible for the costs of any recommended books.In this section

Diploma in Emergency Medical Care (Self-pay programme)

Two-year programme
On completion of this programme the learner will be eligible to register as a paramedic.

Admission Requirements 
An applicant must comply with either point 1, 2 or 3.

  1. Applicant with Senior Certificate (prior to 2009) with University exemption, or its equivalent (NQF level 4) as determined with an M-score of 10 and at least an E symbol on Higher Grade or a D symbol on Standard Grade pass for all of the following subjects:
    • Mathematics
    • English
    • Physical science
    • Biology
     
  2. Applicants with a National Senior Certificate with a diploma endorsement must have the following subjects, all at NQF level 4 and rating codes as stipulated:
    • Mathematics (code 3)
    • English (code 5)
    • Physical Science (code 3)
    • Life Sciences (code 3)
    • Additional Subject 1 (code 3)
    • Additional Subject 2 (code 3)
    The applicant must have a minimum of 21 points which excludes Life Orientation. 

  3. Applicants with a National Certificate (Vocational) must have achieved a minimum of 60% for all of the following subjects:
    • Mathematics at NQF level 4
    • English at NQF level 4
    • Physical Science at NQF level 4
    • Life Sciences at NQF level 4

Applicants will also undergo a fitness test, psychometric testing and an interview as part of the selection process. Payment of a non-refundable application fee and South African citizenship will also be required. 

You may have to travel to the nearest approved learning centre as part of the application process.

Recognition of Prior Learning minimum requirements

  • Have a valid Matric (grade 12)
  • Be 25 years and older
  • Be a registered Ambulance Emergency Assistant (AEA) with the HPCSA
  • Have a minimum of 5 years operational experience
  • Be currently employed by an Emergency Medical Service
  • Write and pass a theory and clinical assessments

Fees relating to the fitness assessment will be communicated once you have been shortlisted. A non-refundable application fee is required by all qualifying applicants before closing date.
