The answer is that it depends on the airline you’re flying with.
Some airlines have separate bag drop desks for people who have checked in on line, and the lines move faster than at conventional check-in desks.
Some airlines charge for advance seat selection. If you haven’t already selected seats, British Airways for example opens all the remaining unselected seats in your cabin class for you to chose between for free once on-line check-in starts. By the time you get to the airport most other people will have already checked in and you may not like any of the seats that are still available.
There’s a theoretical advantage in that if the airline definitely knows you’re coming, you’re less likely to be bumped if the flight is oversold.
If you’ve ordered special meals, the sooner they know for certain you’re coming, the less risk that the caterers will load something else.
And probably most important of all – if there’s anything at all wrong with your ticket, you find out 24 hours before departure and have a chance to do something about it before it is too late. Especially important if you’ve booked through an on-line travel agent.
