Learnership Stipend

What is a learnership Stipend? A learnership stipend is a structured training module that includes theory and practice within the workspace.  The program lasts 6 months to a year and once completed the learner receives a qualification that is NQF registered.  During the learnership, a monthly stipend is given.  Funding for a learnership is around R45 500, and R2000 is given to learner as a stipend during the program.

South Africas legislation sets a minimum level.  Employers choose the final amount or maximum.  Its up to the employer to decide how much they can afford. Just as salaries range from employer to employer and from sector to sector, including stipends.

Some learners earn the bare minimum because they accepted it and couldn’t  negotiate on their real expenses.  These learners either have to leave the program or just be grateful for what they signed up for and act professionally.

Visually impaired learners need specific accommodations in place.  There needs to be full access and amenities for those who are wheelchair bound or blind.

Visually impaired learners receive additional stipends for assistance such as transport as they may not have access to public transport – especially if they live in rural areas.  Most rely on private taxis or pay someone they know a monthly fee for lifts.

Stipends aren’t performance-based bonuses.  Many companies can’t afford to pay their learners on an hourly basis usually offer stipends to assist learners with expenses that need covering during learniship program.  This includes costs such as:

  • Travel
  • Housing
  • Food
  • Entertainment

If employers agree on a stipend amount instead of a wage, there should be information available on the advertised internship and it should be mentioned in the interview.
