No, GEICO does not offer an insurance licensing program for GEICO Local Agent appointments. Almost all GEICO Local Agent candidates are already licensed before the GEICO Local Agent application process but the few who are not must go through their State insurance licensing division to complete licensing requirements.

How much does it cost to start a GEICO agency and does GEICO offer loans or advanced commissions to help with start-up costs?

Generally, start-up costs for a new GEICO agency range between $100,000 and $250,000, depending on the market. Normal start-up costs are office leases, office build-outs, equipment, employee expenses, marketing and advertising, insurance, phone service, and all those things that are necessary to open and run a business. GEICO does not offer any loans or advanced commissions to help with general start-up costs—successful GEICO Local Agent candidates have saved money in preparation for the opportunity to start-up a business.

GEICO Local Agents are paid solely by new business and renewal business commission for the insurance premium they generate. The commission payment is an ACH transaction made once a month, normally by the 4th business day each month.

GEICO owns the book of business—there is no GEICO Local Agent “equity” in the business.

What is the GEICO Local Agent business model?

GEICO Local Agents are entrepreneurs who go into business to represent GEICO and property partners exclusively. Their primary role is to prospect and generate insurance leads and policies that GEICO would otherwise not capture. GEICO Local Agents lease or own their retail storefront offices with excellent drive by visibility. These storefronts and the hours of operation encourage walk-in customers but most GEICO Local Agent new policies are sold over the phone. GEICO Local Agents hire, train, and pay their employees who are licensed, professional insurance counselors. GEICO Local Agents on average employ 5 to 6 employees. GEICO trains and supports new GEICO Local Agents on GEICO procedure and policy but it’s the GEICO Local Agent’s responsibility to train her/his employees.
