The city of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services is offering 20 bursaries to Johannesburg residents who want to pursue careers in fire fighting and Emergency Medical Care.
2020 is getting closer and closer, and as we move towards the end of the year, matric learners are completing their final exams and getting ready to face the real world.
But the prospect of what the future holds can be daunting, especially if you are not sure what to do. Further studying is always a good option, the problem is, not all matriculants know what to study, and many cannot afford it.
Some young adults are still figuring out a career path to take, or would like to further their studies, or are looking for opportunities in a new and exciting field, but are not sure how to go about this.
The city of Johannesburg EMS is hoping to help with these predicaments by providing 20 bursaries to graduates and young adults are looking to pursue a career in Emergency Management Services.
These bursaries will be available to successful candidates between the ages of 17 and 25 years old who reside permanently within the City.
The full-time undergraduate studies that are offered cover two EMS fields, with three qualification choices, namely:
- A Diploma in Fire Technologies at the Tshwane University of Technology (three years)
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency Medical Care at the University of Johannesburg (four years)
- A National Diploma in Emergency Medical Care at the University of Johannesburg (four years).
The bursaries for these courses will cover the tuition and registration fees, as well as the prescribed books and study material. Successful candidates are expected to complete their studies at one of the two institutions mentioned above.
The criteria for consideration include:
- A minimum D grade (63–66 percent) in science and mathematics
- Must be a South African Citizen between the ages of 17 and 25
- Good physical fitness
- Need financial help with tertiary education (combined household income of less than R15 000 monthly)
To apply, a CV is required with certified copies of the following documents:
- Most recent academic record
- South African Identity Document (ID)
- Proof of residence in Johannesburg (municipal statements for utilities or rates and taxes)
- Proof of household income confirmed by an affidavit
The closing date for applications is Friday, 29 November and they can either be emailed to lufunomap@joburg.org.za or hand-delivered to the Florida Park Fire Station.
Applicants are asked to note that only short-listed candidates will be contacted and it is the learners’ responsibility to seek admission to the relevant tertiary institution.
