Master of Nursing in Child Nursing

An advanced practice nursing role is now well described in South African National Department of Health policy, recognised by the regulatory body (SANC), specified as a professional masters in the HEQSF, and included in the Occupational Specific Dispensations HR remuneration strategy.

These policy documents have guided the development of the first professional Master of Nursing in Child Nursing in South Africa at the University of Cape Town in the Department of Paediatrics & Child Health at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, commencing in February 2016. The programme is offered in collaboration with the UCT Division of Nursing and Midwifery.

We are delighted to announce that the Harry Crossley Foundation have created a new scholarship fund to support nurses undertaking the Master of Nursing in Child Nursing. Admission requirements

  • Four year degree in nursing or a qualification recognised by the senate as equivalent
  • An appropriate postgraduate diploma in clinical nursing at NQF level 8 passed with a higher than 65% average
  • Registration with the SANC as a general and specialist nurse (Applicants from outside SA must submit proof of registration as a nurse within their home countries. Limited registration with the SANC is required for the duration of the course)
  • At least two years clinical experience nursing children after Nursing Council registration as a specialist nurse.
  • IT proficiency and evidence of good English language use and literacy

On completion of the Master of Nursing in Child Nursing programme, graduates will have completed a comprehensive professional portfolio. This qualification will not have a separate register in the SANC, but career-pathing can be pursued within the National Health Service and parallel services, as well as independent Advanced Nursing Practice.

All international graduates will also have an academic transcript of their UCT degree and proof of completed clinical hours and learning that will enable them to apply for acceptance onto other appropriate National Board registers. This is a SADC member state agreement.
