Diploma in Advanced Nursing

By coursework over two years of part-time study. You may elect to study in ONE of the following specialties:

  • NRSE5007 Child Nursing Science
  • NRSE5009 Trauma and Emergency Nursing Science
  • NRSE5003 Intensive Care Nursing Science
  • NRSE5012 Nephrology Nursing Science
  • NRSE5013 Oncology and Palliative Nursing Science
  • NRSE5017 Occupational Health Nursing Science
  • NRSE5019 Nursing Education

CMID5001 Infection Control

(note that Infection Control is not a qualification registered with the South African Nursing Council)

In order to be considered for admission into the Diploma in Advanced Nursing:

  • You must be registered with the South African Nursing Council, as a nurse and midwife
  • You should have had at least one year of post-registration clinical nursing experience in the field of study which you elect.
  • You should be the holder of a four year Diploma in Nursing or a three year Diploma in Nursing, as well as one further basic/post basic diploma

Master of Science in Nursing (MSc Nursing) course work and research report

First Year of Study:

  • NRSE 7000 Basic Sciences Related To Advanced Nursing Studies
  • NRSE 7025 Professional Nursing Dynamics.

Second Year of Study:

You may register in the field of your specialization and a research report. You are required to indicate on your application form the choice of your speciality which you
intend to pursue. You may be admitted to undertake your research on a topic approved under the direction of a supervisor and submit not earlier than six months and not later than two years after the completion of the courses offered:

  • NRSE 7011 Intensive Care Nursing Science
  • NRSE 7012 Child Nursing Science
  • NRSE 7013 Occupational Health Nursing Science
  • NRSE 7015 Advanced Nursing Education

Master of Science in Nursing (MSc Nursing) by dissertation

Candidates registering for this course are required to conduct a line of research under the guidance of a supervisor and submit a dissertation based on that research. This course is available to candidates who hold a Baccalaureate in Nursing.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

A candidate reading for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy is required to engage in and complete an original research for at least two years under the guidance of a supervisor, and submit a thesis.

Admission Requirements

Any of the following may be admitted as a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy:
The holder of a Master’s degree in Nursing – By special permission of the Senate, a graduate of any other university or by means of an assessment mode determined by the Senate. It is further a requirement that you must have published at least one research article in an accredited journal.
