Bachelor of Theology

The three-year Bachelor of Theology degree is GWC’s core programme, and offers engaging courses in doctrine, Biblical languages, history and the much-neglected discipline of Biblical Theology. The BTh is for those wanting to be equipped for vocational ministry of the Word of God, whether in pastoral ministry, youth ministry, children’s work or women’s work.  The curriculum is designed to provide the education and training needed to equip a person for a professional teaching ministry of the Word of God and for leadership in a Christian church, community or organization.  The qualification provides the opportunity to integrate knowledge of the Christian faith with essential skills to minister and lead Christian communities and contribute to the development and transformation of the broader society. The degree is fully accredited by the Council on Higher Education and articulates to an Honours degree.

A National Senior Certificate or equivalent thereof (with a matriculation exemption), with a minimum of 60% in English language and coupled with an achievement rating of 4 or better in four subjects from the designated subjects list. (Per Government Gazette No. 751, 11 July 2008).

Students from outside of South Africa, who have English as a second language, may be required to complete a TOEFL test (or similar) to prove proficiency in English at a level suitable for academic study

English language requirement: You must have an English Language qualification to be accepted onto a course at the University. The minimum acceptable English Language requirement for undergraduate courses is IELTS – 6.0 overall and 5.0 for the written element. This is equivalent to 213 in the computerised TOEFL test, 550 in the written TOEFL test, or 79 – 80 in the internet based TOEFL test.

For postgraduate courses you must have IELTS – 6.5 overall and 6.0 for the written element. This is equivalent to 232 in the computerised TOEFL test, 575 in the written TOEFL test or 90 – 91 in the internet based TOEFL test. Equivalent English language qualifications may be accepted.

Higher Certificate in Theology – HCert(Theology

 The programme has been designed to provide basic theological and pastoral training for lay church workers in various ministries, pastoral skills for community workers, and biblical and general grounding for gap year students wishing to pursue further higher education studies. We offer two tracks within this programme: Pastoral Ministry, and Children’s Ministry. Graduates of the program should be able to explain the basic teachings of Christianity and the overall meaning of the Bible, and give talks based on Old and New Testament passages and on simple biblical themes. They should have an understanding of how healthy churches function, and skills in teaching, counselling and small group leadership.The Higher Certificate in Theology is a one year full-time programme at NQF Level 5, accredited by the Council on Higher Education. The Higher Certificate is also available part-time over three years. Please inquire.

National Senior Certificate or the equivalent thereof with a minimum of 30% in English Language (Per Government Gazette No. 751,11 July 2008). admission through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is permitted for a maximum of 10% of the enrolment for any year. Learners in this category may be permitted to complete the qualification over a maximum of two years with the Faculty Board’s agreement.

EXPLORE is primarily a self-study programme, but many students study better when they form a group at their church or with others in their community.  The material covers both systematic and biblical theology, and encourages the student to develop a deeper understanding of the truth of the Bible.
