DUT Nursing Courses Offered

BTech: Nursing Science Entry Requirements

Career Opportunities The four-year Bachelor of Health Science degree qualifies you as a general nurse and midwife (community, psychiatry) and opens opportunities for working as a general nurse in any clinical setting. Further career prospects are to continue post graduates studies, specialising in clinical nursing, management or academia.

Tuition Fees To assist you with your planning, the 2025/2026 fees have been indicated. An increase for next year to accommodate the inflation rate can be expected.

Additional Entry Requirements: Standardized Assessment Test for Access and Placement (SATAP) and interview will be used to complement the NSC results to assess the applicants’ potential to cope with the academic demands of the programme. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): Candidates applying for recognition of prior learning will be required to provide evidence of competence by means of portfolios and/or challenge assessment as per the targeted learning outcomes.

BTech: Nursing (Occupational Health) Entry Requirements

Minimum Admission Requirements

In addition to Rule G23A, G3, G4, and G7, applicants must be in possession of:

  • A diploma or degree in General Nursing and Midwifery or
  • Have been granted conferment of status (Rule G10A refers) or
  • Have been granted advanced standing via RPL (Rule G10B).
  • Be registered with the South African Nursing Council as a General Nurse and Midwife.
  • Have 2 years or more post registration experience as general nurse and midwife.
  • Have proof of professional indemnity.
  • Preference will be given to applicants working in managerial positions

In addition to the above:
DUT’s general rules will apply with regards to admission requirements based on work experience, age and maturity, and admission via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
The admission of international students will be according to DUT and South African Nursing Council Admissions Policy for International Students and General Rules G4 and G7 (5).

BTech: Nursing (Primary Health Care) Entry Requirements

Minimum Admission Requirements

In addition to Rule G23A, G3, G4, and G7, applicants must be in possession of:

  • A diploma or degree in General Nursing and Midwifery or
  • Have been granted conferment of status (Rule G10A refers) or
  • Have been granted advanced standing via RPL (Rule G10B).
  • Be registered with the South African Nursing Council as a General Nurse and Midwife.
  • Have 2 years or more post registration experience as general nurse and midwife.
  • Have proof of professional indemnity

MTech: Nursing Entry Requirements

This full research qualification is aligned to Rule G24 and the guidelines in the Post Graduate Student Handbook.This 180 credit qualification is offered at the SAQA NQF Level 9.

Requirements: 

In addition to Rule G24(1), persons must be in possession of an appropriate BTech or Bachelors degree, or have been granted status or advanced standing according to Rule G10.Please also refer to the Postgraduate Student Handbook.

In accordance with Rule G5,acceptance into the programme is limited,and entry into the MTech programme is not automatic. To register for the Master of Technology degree:Nursing,a student shall:

  • Be registered with SANC as a general nurse;
  • Be in possession of a senior certificate unless exempted by the mature age exemption;
  • Submit and have a concept paper accepted by the department.

DTech: Nursing Entry Requirements

This full research qualification is aligned to Rule G25 and G26 and the guidelines in the Post Graduate Student Handbook. This 360 credit qualification is offered at the SAQA NQF Level 10.

Assessment and Moderation
Post graduate assessment will be aligned to Postgraduate policies and guidelines. Please refer to Rule G25 (4) and the Postgraduate Student Handbook.

  • Submit and have a concept paper accepted by the department.

How To Apply For Nursing At DUT

  1. Apply online at the Central Applications Office (CAO). (A prospective student who wishes to study at the DUT must apply via the CAO.)

Please complete the CAO application form, and attach certified copies of your identity document and Grade 12 certificate (or final Grade 11, June/ Trial Grade 12 report if you have not written your final examination). The application form must reach the CAO office before the closing date of 31 October. Please refer to specific programmes for relevant closing dates, as some programmes close earlier than 31 October. Include the appropriate application fee of R220 (non-refundable) when submitting your application form. Make sure that your application AND fee reach the CAO before the closing date. Submission of a completed application form does not imply that you have been accepted as a student, or that you may register.
